Wild Salmon Abundance and Why it's so Important

At Sena Sea all of our fish are wild-caught in Alaska, never farmed. Our commitment to sourcing wild-caught fish from Alaska ensures high-quality seafood products for our customers. Our wild Alaskan fish are better tasting, healthier and more environmentally sustainable compared to farmed fish. By avoiding fish farming practices, we can help preserve the natural ecosystems and biodiversity of Alaska's waters. We are extremely grateful for the abundance of salmon we receive in Alaska each year.  Salmon is not only a delicious and nutritious food but also holds ecological significance.

Here are a few reasons to be grateful for an abundance of salmon:

  1. Nutritional Value: Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, vitamins (such as vitamin D), and minerals. Consuming salmon can contribute to a healthy and balanced diet, promoting heart health, brain function, and overall well-being.
  1. Culinary Delight: Salmon is renowned for its versatility in the kitchen. It can be grilled, baked, smoked, or used in various dishes like sushi, sashimi, salads, and more. Its unique flavor and texture make it a favorite among seafood lovers worldwide.
  1. Environmental Indicators: Salmon populations serve as vital indicators of the health of freshwater and marine ecosystems. An abundance of salmon suggests a healthy environment, as they require clean water and well-functioning ecosystems to thrive. Gratitude for an abundance of salmon can be a reflection of the ecological balance in the region.
  1. Cultural Importance: Salmon holds significant cultural and historical value in many societies, particularly for indigenous communities. It has been a staple food for various indigenous cultures for generations, representing traditions, sustenance, and cultural identity. Expressing gratitude for an abundance of salmon honors these cultural connections.
  1. Conservation Efforts: An abundance of salmon can indicate successful conservation and management strategies. Sustainable fishing practices, habitat restoration, and protective measures contribute to the preservation and recovery of salmon populations. Gratitude for an abundance of salmon acknowledges the collective efforts to maintain healthy fish stocks.

Along with the conscious efforts to promote the abundance of salmon through our many sustainable practices, we have also partnered with The Copper River Watershed Project. A truly incredible organization that promotes a salmon-rich, intact watershed and includes culturally diverse communities by forming partnerships for watershed-scale planning and projects. We believe in the mission of the Copper River Watershed Project, and we are proud that they believe in ours and support our efforts by recommending us as your source for Wild Copper River Salmon.

It’s also important to note the incredible job that The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has in managing and monitoring the salmon populations in Alaska. They conduct extensive research, monitoring, and assessment programs to estimate salmon abundance and ensure sustainable fishing practices. These efforts involve counting salmon returning to their spawning grounds, collecting data on juvenile salmon in freshwater, and monitoring commercial and recreational fishing activities.

Celebrating the abundance of salmon and recognizing its significance on various levels is wonderful. Sena Sea is proud to be a part of this movement.
