Hi there!
I am not Sena...My name is Beth Baker, she asked me to write a post for her.
Why?
Because besides being a huge fan of her fish and of her in general (she's pretty great), I am also a running coach. I own Running Evolution and we coach beginner runners to get started. But once they’re hooked on those running endorphins, many of them advance to half marathons, full marathons, and even longer distances.
As the weather cools down, racing season heats up for half and full marathon races! And as a coach, one of the most common questions I get is, "What should I eat while training for a half or full marathon?"
Most people expect or WANT me to say, "Load up on carbs."
But what I actually tell them is: "Eat ALL THE SALMON!"
Carbs are great right before training runs and races, but when you're in the thick of training, your body is building muscle and needs high-quality protein and nutrient-dense foods to support endurance and recovery. Salmon is perfect for that!
-
High-Quality Protein: Salmon provides a great source of lean protein (over 20 grams per serving!), which is essential for the muscle repair and growth that is crucial for marathoners pushing their bodies to the limit.
-
Vitamins and Minerals: Salmon is rich in B vitamins (especially B12), which aid in energy production and metabolism. It also contains vitamin D, important for bone health, and minerals like potassium, which help maintain electrolyte balance.
-
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Omega-3s in salmon not only reduce inflammation but also support cardiovascular health, improving blood flow and endurance during long-distance runs.
-
Healthy Fats for Energy: The healthy fats in salmon provide a long-lasting energy source, helping to fuel long training sessions without causing energy spikes and crashes.
Wild-caught salmon is a great addition to any runner or athlete's diet! And even if you're not a runner, a lot of us are in training for other things: life is a marathon.
Coach Beth Baker (here eating a fish taco) is Chief Running Officer of Running Evolution, and she knows how bad running sucks . . .until it doesn’t. She’s a certified running coach through Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and a certified personal trainer. She’s personally coached almost 3,000 non-runners to run distances from 5Ks to marathons with RE's in-person, corporate and virtual classes.
She also likes tacos.
